Why Not? Super Sonic Storytelling

In an exchange between the Why Not? Kollektiv of which the director and curator Romy Schmidt (Bochum, Germany) is a part and the artist Rojin Sharafi (Vienna, Austria), the strong mutual desire arose to collectively examine the various artistic approaches and to develop new forms of collective narration and non-linear storytelling. The audience will thus be offered two spaces and perspectives for perceiving and interpreting the performative work.

This process intends to merge the various individual artistic processes of the involved artists researching in different art disciplines around the mutual questions - "Who" is told in the European institutional mainstream "How", "by whom" and "for whose viewing and listening habits"? How can his- and herstories be told in a collective way? Which spaces and conditions do these presuppose?

A virtual space largely free from hegemonic narrative and performance traditions will be designed. This will be understood both as an extension and a juxtaposition to the analogue art space. The audience will thus be offered two spaces and perspectives for perceiving and interpreting the performative work.

The Why Not? Kollektiv was founded three years ago as a result of a merger of various artists living in the Ruhr Area and North Rhine-Westphalia, all tackling issues of visibility and representation of non-European and diasporic narratives in the institutional mainstream in the disciplines of dance, music, performance and media art.
Rojin Sharafi is a Vienna-based composer, musician and performer who questions prevailing listening habits in the institutional and mainstream in Europe.
