''Die Festung'' (The Citadel) is a non-profit film project, in which the process of film making is arranged publicly and transparently as a form of happening in the urban space. Along with the main figures, residents of Gelsenkirchen and significant locations of public life form the protagonists of the film. The transmedially working screenwriter Akin Emanuel Şipal sets great store by the process having the same value as the intention to make a finished full-length film that can be shown at international festivals. ''Die Festung'' by Akin Emanuel Şipal  is intended to be the first step in a longer-term cinematic analysis of Gelsenkirchen or the Ruhr region. On the one hand, the town has great cinematic potential, and on the other, film-making as an artistic process provides space for encounters from which new projects can be created. While the makers take a step towards the town through the open process of film-making, content-wise there are three figures in the focus who join forces and justify their withdrawal from society with a type of eclectic manifesto.

The main roles are played by Sven Gey, Simina German and Johanna Wieking.
