Mülheim is not known beyond its own city borders for its thriving artistic and cultural scene. Mülheim is generally not known for its attractiveness. Every fifth shop in the city centre lies empty. It is therefore even more important that there are people such as Gert Rudolph who are enlivening and networking the existing scene. From 13–30 October, he put life back into the former Woolworth branch in Mülheim's city centre with the ART SQUARE Ruhr.kreativ project. It marked a revitalisation of vacant property and represented an initiative to network local artists. The event had a multifaceted programme of music, literature, photography and painting between the shop shelves of the former shrine to consumerism. It attracted around 3000 people and perhaps helped to raise future openness to the programme's themes.
